My friend just gave me 60 protein packets of Myoplex Original because he wasn't using them....the catch is that the expiration date on the box is June 2010. They were free so I took them, but is there any health risk considering they're 8 months past date?
I know Myoplex isn't the best protein out there, but hey...free is free.

If they are sealed, DON'T WORRY! There is NO health risk. They are probably FINE! The law simply says they have to have expiration dates. They remove the water and seal them VERY well, so they will "spoil" VERY slowly! The first thing that happens is the taste is affected by the container, etc... That said, a little extra water could OBVIOUSLY, QUICKLY degrade it. So if it gets wet, give it maybe 8 hours, and throw it out after that.
The SEALED liquids are different, since they pasturize them, and seal them so well. STILL, they can go bad quicker and DEFINITELY pick up tastes quicker, so I would pay more attention to THOSE dates. If they are sealed well, SQUEEZE the container. It should give a LITTLE! If it doesn't, it could be waste from bacteria! If it gives too much, it could be a LEAK! Either way, THROW IT OUT!

A longer period doesn't make the metal content worse, unless they are packed in aluminum and the metal is aluminum.
And I heard a theory that sounds VERY likely as to how the problem occurred. Apparently some idiots started a massive protein CONCENTRATE business from china! Because it costs so little money up front, it has gotten HUGE. They probably use machinery that is NOT "food quality". They DON'T care about things like back hauling, etc... So it is TAINTED! REFINED proteins get much of the coontamination removed.
BTW back hauling is the practice of hauling something else BACK after you make a hauling run. If you haul ONLY pesticides, NO PROBLEM! If you haul ONLY non alergenic foods, NO PROBLEM! If you haul ONLY clean materials like pants and new bedding, NO PROBLEM! BUT! BUT!!!!!! Well, I can best illustrate it by the plot of an episode of house.
Three kids where near death. Actually, one ended up dying! They couldn't figure out what it was! So what was it? They all wore jeans that came from the same supplier! The jeans were shipped in a truck that had earlier shipped pesticides! The pants had the pesticide on them and the kids wore the new jeans UNWASHED! They absorbed the pesticide through their skin!
IMAGINE if those trucks were hauling open containers of protein! It IS conceivable that a truck could ship metals to a battery plant(Cadmium, lead, and nickle ALL happen to be used in making batteries! MANY batteries have NICKLE. NICKLE CADMIUM batteries have NICKLE AND CADMIUM! LEAD ACID batteries, often used in old heavy duty areas, like cars, boats, and trucks, have LEAD!), and ship protein back, and contaminate it. All it takes is some IDIOT that cares more about speed and cost than safety.
