Free weights or Maxrack?

Which is better?

This is a maxrack...

I used to use it because of the safety bars just in case I hit failure. I usually go to a gym that isn't very busy so finding a spotter is rare.

What to do BP army?

Since safety is first, this is better than no rack at all. That's what I like about it.

What I don't like: You're overpaying and your CNS is being robbed in the process. Here's what I mean...

Get yourself a regular old power rack, say a body solid one with adjustable safety pins. Now, you see that evil Smith like device on the maxrack? Doesn't afford you any forward/aft sway if you elect to perform partials, statics or even full range lifts to find the optimal bar groove.

SOLUTION: Say I'm doing top range, close grip partial bench presses. I set the pins up high, loop some HEAVY chains around them and then slide the barbell inside the loops.

PRESTO: Now you have a free hanging bar that sways fore and aft, allowing you to find the optimal bar position given your unique limb length, biomechanics etc.. Best to buy two LONG chains, such that you can progressively lower it a link every other workout, once you've mastered one link. That's one way of building a big bench from the top down...

ONE MORE TIME: Buy THICK chains, none of this fisher-price swingset stuff. An extra pair of safety pins to put down below is a good idea too.
